Our History

The JPL opened its doors on May 1st, 1914 in a modest cold-water flat at 669 rue St. Urbain with a small collection of 500 books. From the beginning the Library was more than mere shelves and texts. It quickly became the meeting place for literary and cultural exchange, maintaining a link to the still flourishing Jewish communities of Eastern Europe while promoting the community’s growth in its new Quebec home.

It’s rare that a book is both chilling and tender. This one pulled me in emotionally in ways I didn’t expect.

Fearful : a powerless story
Roberts, Lauren

Fearful : a powerless story

Her poetry feels like having a conversation with an old friend—witty, intimate, and deeply relatable.

I laughed out loud in parts, but the moments of quiet vulnerability are what really touched me.

Pure Patterson—fast, thrilling, and so entertaining. I picked it up for a quick read and ended up staying up way too late.

Ce livre m’a donné l’impression de partir en voyage — à la fois intime et philosophique. J’ai aimé la façon dont il explore l’identité à travers le mouvement et l’errance.

Juif Berbère et sa pagaie : éloge de l’errance
Suissa, Amnon Jacob

This book is a feast of stories and flavors. I loved how it weaves together culture, memory, and cuisine into something truly unique

Silva never disappoints—this one was sharp, suspenseful, and packed with detail that made it feel so real.

An inside job : a novel

This novel made me pause and reflect. The writing is so lyrical, it stayed with me for days after I finished.

The recipes are so approachable and full of flavor—I’ve already bookmarked several to try again. It feels like cooking with a friend who loves good food.
